Sears Tower has a new antenna. Not the Sears Tower downtown, the original 100-year-old Sears Tower in North Lawndale. The antenna is part of a program to create Wireless Community Networks WCN’s offering wireless high-speed Internet access to four underserved, low-income communities in Illinois.

WCN’s are the brain-child of Chicago technology activist Robert Lieberman, CEO of the Center for Neighborhood Technology and Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn.

Wireless Community Network Launches in North Lawndale

CNT is proud to announce the launch of the Wireless Community Network in North Lawndale, Chicago, today at 2pm.

The network will provide North Lawndale residents, organizations, and businesses with high-speed, low-cost internet access. The network makes use of old infrastructure—the Old Sears Tower is the home of the antennae that originates the network signal—and 21st century wireless networking technology.

A press conference will be held in the lobby of the Homan Square Community Center, 3517 W Arthington.


I-GO, CNT’s Car Sharing Program, Expands

I-GO, CNT’s car sharing program, extended its service to Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. I-GO is a membership-based service that provides members with access to a fleet of shared cars. For residents who either do not have a car, or occasionally need access to a second car for short trips, I-GO offers a new way to get around.
