At the August 12 meeting of the Kane County Board Executive Committee, The Community Energy Cooperative announced the launch of its new project to chart the county’s energy future. The Kane County project will evaluate how demand for energy is likely to grow in the county and explore strategies for using aggressive energy efficiency and demand reduction programs to manage growth and produce economic and environmental benefits.

Five I-GO vehicles will be based in designated spaces at sites owned by the CTA. The Chicago Transit Board approved the agreement today between the CTA, CNT and its affiliate I-GO Car Sharing. The new partnership is designed to promote the use of public transportation by providing additional options for public transit users.
“Providing links between the CTA and other modes of transportation, such as the CTA’s Bike & Ride program, improves the options for CTA customers,” said CTA President Frank Kruesi. “Combined with the convenience of public transit, car sharing provides an alternative to private car ownership and has the potential to attract more drivers to public transit use.”

CNT conducted an analysis of public comment on the Prairie Parkway–a proposed highway in Kane and Kendall Counties in the western part of the region. Comment was collected by the Illinois Department of Transportation in 2001 and 2002 and represents over 1000 individuals and institutions. The analysis indicates strong opposition to the proposed new highway by those who might be considered potential beneficiaries; three-quarters of people living within fifteen miles of the proposed alignment oppose the project. Downtown residents and workers without cars now have a new, environmentally friendly way to get their weekly grocery shopping and other errands done.
The nonprofit Center for Neighborhood Technology’s I-GO car-sharing program has opened its first downtown location, offering gas-electric hybrid cars for people who want a car for short spurts but don’t want to keep it.
