Have You Heard? “I Am The Government”
What happened in Florida in the 2000 election wasn’t unique. In fact here in Chicago, over 6 percent of the vote went uncounted—that’s 60,000 voices that went unheard. We can do better…and we will.
CNT, in collaboration with the League of Women Voters of Chicago, is pleased to announce the launch of I Am The Government, an innovative new project that aims to make Chicago an example of how young people can change the face of American democracy.
I Am The Government is sponsoring a massive pollwatching project in Chicago. They have pledged to recruit and train 500 pollwatchers for November 2nd. Pollwatchers are people like you who visit voting precincts on Election Day. With a little training, you will observe, report problems, and actually correct errors as they occur. Most importantly, you’re there to help ensure every single vote counts. We all want a fair election. But if we don’t step up and take part, there are simply no guarantees.

I Am The Government came out of a groundbreaking 2003 study by LWV Chicago looking at civic participation. The findings were startling: many Americans have become mere sideline observers of their own public business, and the problem is worst among people age 18-25. But contrary to popular belief, it’s not that young people are apathetic—the League found that young people don’t want empty talk, they want tools they can use to make a difference.
