The Inherent Value of Transit-Oriented Development
The market for housing located near transit seems to grow stronger everyday. Why is that? In addition to its many other benefits, transit-oriented development TOD offers households the opportunity to reduce their transportation expenditures by giving them transportation alternatives to the automobile and easy access to local services and amenities.
In the most recent newsletter of the Center for Transit Oriented Development CTOD, CNT’s Scott Bernstein and Carrie Makarewicz make a case for the inherent “affordability” of TOD using brand new research carried out by CNT and CTOD. With funding from the Brookings Institution Urban Markets Initiative, the McKnight Foundation and the Surdna Foundation, the two groups have developed an “Affordability Index” that predicts the costs of transportation a household is likely to bear given its geographic location in a region.
