Green in the News

It’s hard to pick up a paper today without it including at least one article or reference to sustainability or being “green.” A few weeks back the New York Times ran a special series on green business, The Business of Green. In an article about the greening of Chicago, author Keith Schneider talked to CNT’s Scott Bernstein for some insight into the changes that have taken place in the city, especially in the context of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s goal to make Chicago the greenest city in the country. And just today the Chicago Sun-Times reported on a ranking released by SustainLane of America’s greenest cities. According to this ranking, Chicago has a ways to go to achieve Daley’s goal: The city came in fifth in the nation.

One of the measures SustainLane’s ranking takes into consideration is green building. Chicago came in fifteenth in this category, but we think it deserves extra points for being only one of two cities to have two platinum green buildings. CNT’s green building was featured in this week’s Chronicle of Philanthropy. The Chronicle ran a special feature on green building and green design in the non-profit sector. We hope that other non-profits will consider the benefits, especially the economic ones, of going green. We hope our building stands as a good model of how to go green when you do not have the luxury of a new building or a large budget.
