CNT Green Infrastructure Out-Weathers the Storm of the Century

On September 13th and 14th, 2008, the Chicago Region experienced a 2-day rainfall that was indeed the “Storm of the Century”. It was the largest storm ever recorded in the 119-year history of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The Storm also, at 6.83 inches over two days, nearly met the definition of a 100-year storm in Chicago. Rivers surrounded houses, an interstate highway and several other arterials were closed for days, and thousands of basements were flooded throughout the region.

But CNT and St. Margaret Mary Parish found a small silver lining beneath the clouds on Chicago’s north side.

City of Chicago Releases Climate Action Plan

The City of Chicago launched its Chicago Climate Action Plan Thursday at the Shedd Aquarium with the backdrop of the city skyline and blue skies. The release is a major milestone for CNT’s climate change work. CNT led the mitigation research team for the Chicago Climate Change Task Force that developed the report.

CNT’s Transportation Leadership Grows

CNT is pleased to announce that María Choca Urban will serve as Director for Transportation and Community Development. María’s career in transportation and community development spans 15 years in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining CNT, she served as the Chicago Transit Authority’s General Manager for Policy and Strategic Solutions where she directed the CTA’s Transit Oriented Development (TOD) initiatives including a joint effort with the City of Chicago to undertake several pilot projects and development of the CTA’s first TOD plan for its rail network.

CNT Research Key to City of Chicago’s Climate Action Plan

sept 032For the first time, the City of Chicago has hard data on its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a broad portfolio of reduction strategies to inform efforts to curb its contribution to climate change. Commissioned by the city to help create its recently released Climate Action Plan, CNT conducted the emissions and mitigation-strategies research to reach the city’s emission reduction target of 25% below 1990 levels by the year 2020.
