Pulaski Park, in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, has a long history of community participation. The park field house, built in 1914, now plays host to neighborhood classes and fitness programs, local crafts fairs, a theater group and a sword-fighting club, and a legendary Haunted House. Now Pulaski Park is serving the community in a new way- by demonstrating green technologies and how communities can get involved.

In a press conference on Wednesday in eight U.S. cities, including Chicago, a coalition of community and business leaders announced the release of “Build for America: A Five-Point Plan to get our Economy Moving”. On the heels of the Wall Street bailout and hours before the final presidential debate, community and business leaders joined together to call on the next President and Congress to strengthen our local and national economies by building a 21st Century transportation system.

Starting at the end of this year, residents around the Chicago region will have a more convenient way to travel. The “Smart Card” program will feature a joint card that allows access both to I-GO cars and rides on the CTA, enabling a more integrated approach to public transportation. Promoting multiple transportation options—and better ways to transfer mode to mode, like with a joint Smart Card—effectively gives people better reasons for staying out of their cars, which can save them money and reduce congestion and pollution in the region.

Power Smart Pricing is a different electricity pricing option offered by the Ameren Illinois Utilities and administered by CNT Energy. Under the standard residential rate, electricity costs the same amount no matter what time of day you use it. Power Smart Pricing lets you pay the hourly, wholesale market price of electricity which varies throughout the day and is often lower than the standard fixed rate. The program has been available since May 2007 and boasts more than 2,000 participants, several of whom recently sang its praises to CNT Energy staff and local newspaper reporters.

Recent Storm Demonstrates the Importance of Capturing Raindrops Where They Fall
WHAT: Less than a year ago, on October 18th, the students at St. Margaret Mary Elementary School in the Rogers Park neighborhood planted 500 seedlings of 17 species of native plants in a bioswale cut out of the main parking lot.
