Environmental Stewards: CNT Needs Your Help!
CNT and the U.S. Forest Service’s Northern Research Station have recently launched Chicago STEW-MAP (Stewardship Mapping and Assessment Project), an online database that will identify organizations in the Chicago region that conduct stewardship and map the geographic turf of stewardship groups.
CNT and the Forest Service need stewardship groups’ help in making STEW-MAP as comprehensive and useful as possible. Any group that conserves, manages, cares for, monitors, advocates for, and educates the public about local environments (including water, land, air, waste, toxics, and energy issues) can take the STEW-MAP survey at http://stewmap.cnt.org/.
CNT and the Forest Service will overlay the environmental stewardship information we collect with existing data on environmental quality and sustainability. The project will offer new ways to analyze existing networks and resources, and provide opportunities for partnerships and funding.
A similar study conducted in New York City has already helped stewardship groups find each other and obtain new resources and partners. We hope that the Chicago region study will have similarly positive results throughout northern Illinois, northwest Indiana, and beyond.
