Oakland Equity Express Pilot Program

In April 2009, CNT completed the Equity Express Pilot Program. With our partners the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC), and with funding from the City of Oakland, CNT developed and implemented a series of six workshops designed to test the premise that a focus on better managing expenses in energy, transportation, telecommunications and food could create additional disposable income and accelerate the rate at which households accumulate assets, while at the same time reducing the environmental impact of household spending decisions. CNT and EBALDC conducted two complete rounds of workshops at EBALDC’s affordable rental properties; the first at Lion Creek Crossings in East Oakland, the second at Oakland Point LP, a scattered-site development in West Oakland.

Oakland participants were excited when looking back at changing attitudes about money and a few even shared changes that they noticed in one another. CNT is currently working to expand Equity Express programming in the Bay Area, as well as bring the program to other cities.
