Caucuses

It is generally agreed that the word caucus is an American invention, but it is debated where we got it from. Some say the Algonquin used cau'-cau-as'u meaining "counsel," while others look to the Medieval Latin caucus, meaning "drinking vessel." Still others note that Finns, who migrated in large numbers to the northeaster and Great Lakes regions, used a word kokous meaning an official meeting. What is not in the dictionary; however, is CTAQC's version of a Caucus: an informal gathering to represent regional constituents who want to influence transportation policy.

Caucuses occur every two years to follow up on the recommendations developed in the summits. CTAQC staff return to the summit areas to check up on the status of local issues.

What is the focus of this Caucus?

You told us you want walkable communities.

Our Pedestrian Program Manager has designed a survey to help you assess walkability so you can create change in your community. Join us at your area's Caucus to learn how to use it in your community! For more information, contact Ben Helphand at ben@cnt.org.

You told us you want environmentally sustainable transportation options.

Roads and parking lots contribute to water pollution and cause flooding in some areas. But what effect do they have in your community?

As CTAQC members, you have your finger on the pulse of your community. That is why, when scheduling the upcoming round of 11 geographically diverse Caucuses, we are asking you to partner with us to make your area's Caucus a memorable experience and influential in regional affairs.

We are looking for partners who will help us in three important ways:

  • 1. Consult on a date, time and location for the event.

  • 2. Commit to bring 5 or more participants to the event.

  • 3. Review the draft of the Caucus Report.
