  • Motor vehicles are responsible for nearly half of the emissions of smog-forming NOx and VOCs in the US, according to recent EPA data. It's no wonder then that encouraging alternative transportation options is one of the key strategies of Clean Air Counts (CAC), an initiative that aims to decrease smog-forming emissions by 5 tons/day in the Chicago area.

CAC is a nonprofit initiative of the Metropolitan Mayors' Caucus, CNT, USEPA, IEPA, LEED Council, The Delta Institute, Openlands Project and others. CAC provides advice to households, businesses and municipalities about how they can decrease their contribution to smog. The program focuses on specific changes in behaviors and product choices that members can make.

Core CAC strategies for reducing smog-forming emissions include alternative transportation, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, native landscaping, and low-VOC paints, cleaning products and building materials. Members can record changes they have made in these on the website, which automatically calculates the members personal reduction of smog-forming emissions.
