Analysis of Public Opinion on the Proposed Prairie Parkway

The Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) conducted an analysis of public comment on the Prairie Parkway in mid-2004, with two primary goals in mind. The first was to efficiently summarize the largest body of documentation available on public attitude toward the Prairie Parkway; the second was to develop a replicable methodology for analyzing abundant comment in the hope that this methodology, or one similar to it, would by adopted by implementers responsible for conducting public involvement processes.

This comment was collected by the Illinois Department of Transportation in 2001 and 2002 and represents well over 1000 individuals and institutions. The analysis indicates strong opposition to the proposed new highway by those who might be considered potential beneficiaries; three-quarters of people living within fifteen miles of the proposed alignment oppose the project. Support for a new highway through the agricultural preservation regions of Kane and Kendall Counties comes primarily from McHenry County businesses and residents.
