A Background of Walkers Win!

This past year we have advanced significantly toward the program's goals of: bringing available resources to underserved communities, determining the needs and impacts of transportation on those communities, raising awareness of the implications of the built environment and the need for safe pedestrian access, giving communities tools to generate/implement change, and serving as a voice for pedestrians among government agencies.

In the past 5 years, Walkers Win! organizers have worked with parent groups at 19 schools and a number of community groups in the Chicago neighborhoods of Logan Square, Humboldt Park, and West Town to improve pedestrian safety. Local Walkers Win! committees identified pedestrian issues, raised neighborhood awareness, and organized to improve pedestrian safety for their children and all residents. Walkers Win! committees have won stop signs and infrastructure changes for their neighborhoods and held local officials accountable for their promises in regard to traffic calming and sidewalk improvements, creating and preserving safe communities for people on foot.
