Much like energy efficiency, the idea of location efficiency provides a new lens for using resources in a smarter, more sustainable way. Location-efficient communities are dense and vibrant, with walkable streets, access to transit, proximity to jobs, mixed land uses, and concentrations of retail and services.

For residents, living in location-efficient neighborhoods requires less time, money and greenhouse gas emissions to meet everyday travel needs. Living in a connected community with access to jobs and transit can provide real savings, as transportation costs are typically a household's second-highest expense after housing. Location efficiency also reduces greenhouse gas emissions since households aren't as reliant on costly, carbon-intensive automobile travel.

The Location Efficiency Hub showcases our research, strategies and decision-support tools designed to help planners, policy makers and individuals measure and implement location-efficient development across America.
